If you heard of pergolas, but still not quite sure what they are, let me offer a brief description. A pergola is a structure that creates a cool and shaded, pleasant area below. Support columns run along the sides, connecting to various types of lattice framework above. It is very common to leave the walls of open structure, while the top may be covered by a variety of plants or vines at the top.
Of course you can train your plants climb to the top of the garden structure, so choose things like roses, grapes, jasmine are the most appropriate. Climbing plants and vines are not a requirement however, and choose what you want your structure to look like will depend on your personal taste. Pergola professional builders often incorporate the structure into a trellis or arbor, providing further accents the garden. Your garden structure can be a simple feature in your garden, or could even be a more prepared to act as road or path, or designed as a corner pergola.

Ryan, my next door neighbor has just put up a garden pergola. I thought one would be a great entertaining feature in my garden as well. Unfortunately, I was taken aback by the price he paid for his kit. That was way over my budget.
Unperturbed, I searched the internet for pergola designs. There are plenty of free pergola plans online but I could not come across one in the size I wanted. Also the diagrams and building notes seemed poor.
However I unearthed a result - pergola plans obtainable in an array of sizes. They come with detailed and easy to understand notes on how to build a pergola as well as a full list of materials required. And you’ll discover the tools you will require too.
I was able to cost the materials to verify I could build within my budget. I thought I could erect a pergola. And I did. In one weekend!
Building a pergola was much easier than I imagined it would be. And that was primarily due to the precise, detailed and easy to understand notes. There were none of those scratching my head pondering how a piece fitted moments!
Pergola plans tips by Sharon
The most important and delicate part of your residence is the wood material. Whether it is the floor covering, furniture, doors, cabinets or window panes, wood has to be the primary thing to be given attention to. Ignorance towards the wood may lead to the development of termites giving you a hollow object. On annual basis it is essential that you get fumigation done. When you inspect doors and windows, look for caulking. Get it done timely to prevent expenditures that may stack up if the difficulty prevails.
• Examine your attic and the roof. Due to the direct sunlight and humidity (depending on your climate) the roof area is likely to most of the fissures. Check for any seepages and fix them up. It is better to look for shingles and fix them up promptly. Dampness tends to ruin all the construction and design of the house. If unattended, humidity can lead to development of fungi. Also this will increase the chance of rodents coming in your house and you wouldn’t like that obviously!
• Check for malfunctioning wires and electronics. Faulty wires if not maintained may have the risk of dangers that can put your life at stake. Get hold of a good technician and allow him to fix all your wiring and electronics. Also do remember to check the batteries of the fire alarms and security checks.

Pergola Design Ideas
These pergolas are, indeed, very beautiful features in their own right, adding height and interest to any outdoor space. The pergola arch can be used to section off parts of the garden, being used as a focal point, leading the eye through to the next part, providing an element of surprise and 'journey', which is so important for adding interest to the garden.
An arbor pergola, on the other hand, provides a cosy retreat in which to while away the hours, and can be enhanced in many ways by the addition of garden furniture sets and seats, cushions, throws, lights, fragrance burners and all manner of accessories.
Many are drawn, on the one hand, to its secluded peacefulness, others to gatherings for intimate chats, or warm, lazy days socialising under its welcoming and cosy protection. Mmm...sounds lovely!
Both pergola and arbor add height to the garden, which can have quite a dramatic effect.
A client recently said to me, as soon as she had seen both pergolas built, "...But the garden looks so much bigger!"

Before you rush out and learn how to build a pergola, here are seven simple mistakes you must avoid.
#1. Don’t build your pergola without checking the permit requirements. Building inspectors take a dim view of this mistake. It’s so much easier to avoid problems than sort them out later.
#2. Don’t dig holes for your pergola posts without first checking for underground utilities. You will be liable for potentially expensive damage, you will probably have broken the law, and you could be killed!
You can find your State’s “call before you dig” 811 number by calling 1-888-258-0808.
#3. Don’t waste thousands of dollars getting a contractor to build it when you could build it yourself in as little as a weekend for only a few hundred bucks.
#4. Don’t squander thousands of dollars employing a contractor just because you don’t want to build it yourself. You can buy a good set of plans & instructions for as little as $20. Buy the materials yourself. Then hire a local handyman to build it. Total cost should be well under $1000.
